He was the image that supported his life through struggle. He was and will remain a role model for the younger generation.
His contribution toward India not only as a scientist but also as a civilian was memorable. The role that he played in putting India in front of the world based on his knowledge and science is commendable. He sacrifices his whole life to his nation without any selfishness and greed. His dream was only to see India with a developed country.
Childhood
The full name of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam in which the initials are his father’s name and grand father’s name. He was born on 15 October 1931 in a Tamil Muslim family. His birthplace was Rameshwaram in Ramnad district of Madras Presidency under British India at that time and know it is located at Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu.
His father Jainulabdeen was a boat owner and his mother Ashiamma was a housewife. Financially his family was not in a good position. A P J Abdul Kalam has 1 sister and 3 brothers and among them, Kalam was the youngest children in the family. To support his family he started to distribute newspaper and this is the first job of A P J Abdul kalam.
Education
He did is high school education from Schwartz higher secondary school at Ramanathapuram. After this, he decided to study physics and in 1954 he graduated in physics BSc from Saint Joseph College in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. After doing BSc in physics he realized that his interest is not in physics and decided to do engineering.
He got admission to Madras Institute of Technology but its fee was too for his family. Then his sister sold her jewelry and gave him money to take admission. Then he took admission in 1955 to study aerospace engineering at MIT.
His dream was to become a fighter piolet that’s why he left his degree in physics and did engineering in aeronautics. He completed his engineering training from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). After completing his graduation in aeronautics he got two chances, one is in the Indian Air Force and other in ministry of defense as a directorate of technical development and production.
His defense ministry interview was good but he was rejected in the air force interview because he got 9th position and the air force had only 8 seats. He was disappointed by his rejection and then decided to go to Delhi to know his other interview’s result and there he was appointed as senior scientific assistance on the salary of 250. Now from here the beginning of a Missile Man was started.
Life History
He was a very simple man and wear a simple coat and a lungi. He loves to play the veena. Despite being from a Muslim family, he believed in all religions. And in childhood, he used to go to the nearest Shiva temple with his friend. Despite being a scientist, he believed in God and did not use any modern instrument like mobile or any other gadget.
He never married and devote his full life to his nation. He loves children and whenever he got time from his schedule he went to interact with children. He likes to motivate them and listen to their doubts. To see his love for children his birthday is celebrated as world students day. This shows that he is not a role model for India only he is also a motivation of the whole world’s youth.
Contributions
He worked on numerous projects and contributes to his knowledge of them. He was a great team builder and team leader. He led many projects during his tenure.
After unsuccessful attempts on a rocket launch, he worked hard and made India’s first indigenous SLV. This SLV III inject the Rohini Satellite in the earth’s nearest orbit in 1980 and made India an exclusive space club member. Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam also played an important role in the development of PSLV.
After this Dr. Abdul Kalam was chosen as a director of two projects. One project was discontinued or closed because not getting the desired result and another project led to the development of PRITHVI Missile and this is one of the top missile technology of India till.
After working in ISRO he was asked to join the DRDO’s projects and appointed as the CEO of the integrated guided missile development program at Bangalore. Under his guidance, the development of AGNI and PRITHVI missile is done.
From his contribution to missile and rocket development, he got the title of “Missile Man of India”.
He also gave his service in the development of nuclear weapons to make India more powerful and confident in front of the world where developed countries were doing many tests on their nuclear weapons. He was also the part of Pokhran nuclear test in 1991-99.
He was also involved in the development of India’s light combat aircraft project. This was his childhood dream to fly in the sky with the birds.
He also opened many institutes and healthcare programs with his mates to help the people who are not economically efficient. He was involved to make Kalam-Raju-Sent for making healthcare accessible to all. He organized many campaigns to help and care for the health of poor people. His contribution to the design or development of a lightweight caliper for the motor disabled patient was memorable.
Death of Dr. Abdul Kalam
In July 2015, Dr. Abdul Kalam traveled to Shillong at the Indian Indian Institution of Management Shillong to deliver a lecture on Creating a Livable Planet Earth. There during his lecture, he feels pain and collapsed and rushed to the nearest hospital where he declared dead due to cardiac arrest.
On the next day, his body was brought to the Delhi with respect and all the national leaders and other respected officers give him last salute and send the body to his hometown with the national flag. On 30 July 2015 with the honor salute the body of Dr. Kalam was laid to rest at Pei Karumbu Ground, Rameswaram.
Awards and honors
For his extreme contribution to the technology and science he was awarded by many awards not only India also by the foreign countries:
Dr. Kalam received Padma Bhushan in 1981 and Padma Vibhushan in 1990 from the Govt. of India for his contribution to ISRO and DRDO.
In 1997, for commendable contribution in the development and modernization of Indian defense technology, he received India’s highest civilian honor, the “Bharat Ratna”.
Accept from this he received many awards from the technical universities and institutions not only in India also from worldwide.
After his death, Dr. kalam received many honors and tributes.
